Goa administration on Monday announced the polling day on February 14 as a public holiday.

“Government of Goa hereby declares Monday, the 14th February 2022 (Magha 25, Saka 1943) as a “Public Holiday” being the “Polling Day” for the General Elections to the Goa Legislative Assembly, 2022, throughout the State of Goa,” read the notice issued by the state government as Goa runs into assembly polls.

The administration has also directed that the public holiday should be a paid holiday for all government and private establishments.

A total of 332 candidates are in the fray for the upcoming Assembly election in the coastal state of Goa this year. While the total nominations received for the forthcoming polls in 2022 was 587.

Political parties and a number of prominent players in the state are preparing to run in the polls to elect 40 members to the Goa Legislative Assembly, and are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts.

While the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a stronghold in the state, the opposition Congress, followed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), is poised to give the BJP a tough fight.

Apart from that, the parties have nominated their chief ministerial candidates ahead of the elections, with the exception of the Congress, which has yet to name a candidate for the position. In this regard, BJP has nominated Pramod Sawant, the current Chief Minister, as its candidate, while the AAP has named Amit Palekar as its chief ministerial candidate.

Goa is set to go to the polls on February 14, with the counting of votes to take place on March 10.
