Rairakhol (Orissa) (PTI): Terming Opposition parties as “power hungry”, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the Congress-led UPA was focusing on speedy development and prosperity of all sections of society.

“The aim of Opposition parties is to grab power by making hollow promises, while Congress always fulfils its commitment to ensure balanced and speedy development,” he said addressing an election meeting in this Western Orissa town.

Describing the five year rule of UPA as a “success story”, Mr. Rahul said the nuclear deal with the US was in the interest of the country as it would help in meeting the ever increasing demand for energy which is badly needed by farmers.

Similarly, the Right to Information Act has come as a boon to the common people who are now able to know facts hitherto concealed from public view, he said adding that Opposition parties also acknowledge its benefits.

Claiming that the UPA had brought smiles on the faces of the farmers, the poor and tribals, he said the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would go a long way in removing poverty by providing jobs in villages.

Indebted farmers also heaved a sigh of relief following waiving of Rs 60,000 crore in farm loans, he said adding mid day meals would boost enrolment in schools.

Turning to Orissa, he alleged the ruling BJD neglected the poor and development work.
